Cedar (or wood) roofing is very popular thanks to its attractive appearance and longevity. This roofing material also provides particularly good insulating properties, especially for larger homes.
Cedar roofs come in two types: cedar shake roof or the cedar shingle roof. The difference lays in their texture. The cedar shingle roof has a more tapered, smooth surface and a uniform appearance, whereas, the cedar shake roof is more of a natural grain texture that is less smooth, and much thicker in both texture and size. The reason for these differences is that while shingles are machine-made, shakes are made by hand. On average, cedar shakes are more expensive to install than cedar shingles due to their longer production time and trickier installation process. These types of roofs have been around since colonial times.
